How is the saving calculated?

We want to give a realistic insight in the savings made possible with LED lighting. We therefore calculate the difference in total cost for both the old bulb and the new LED bulb:

  • Energy costs per hour (depends on the power of the bulb and the price per KWh).
  • Write off per hour (purchase price divided by the lifetime of the bulb).

Energy costs

The power of the old bulb is selected in Step 3 of the wizard. For the LED bulbs we use the power consumption as indicated by their manufacturers. We assume an average price of 12 cents per KWh.

Write off

The price of the LED bulb is based on the best offer for that specific bulb. For the old bulbs we assume the following average lifetimes and prices:

Total Savings

We calculate the savings over a period of 5 years. We assume that on average a bulb is 'on' for 4 hours per day. After 5 years the LED bulb has functioned for 7,300 hours . LED bulbs have a lifetime between 30,000 and 50.000 hours.

    With the flick of a switch, Philips Electronics may have just dramatically lowered America's electric bill. In September the Dutch electronics giant became the first to enter the U.S. Department of Energy's L Prize competition, which seeks an LED alternative to the common 60-watt bulb. Sixty-watt lights account for 50% of the domestic incandescent market; if they were replaced by LED bulbs, the U.S. could save enough electricity per year to light 17.4 million households. If Philips wins the L Prize, it will claim a cash award and federal purchasing agreements worth about $10 million.

  • What are LED bulbs exactly?

    Incandescent and halogen bulbs work by heating a wire. This is very inefficient: only 5% of the energy is converted into light. A L.E.D. (Light Emitting Diode) is an electronic light source with a much higher efficiency. More information on LEDs is available here.

  • What's the difference between LED bulbs and CFL's?

    LED bulbs are more expensive than CFL's, but they last much longer and do not contain hazardous substances (mercury).

  • Which bulbs can I replace by LED retrofits?

    At this moment we advise over the following retrofits: halogen spots (GU10, MR16 and G4), Incandescent bulbs (standard and small Edison screw) and Fluorescent Tubes (T8 and T10).

The Savings Calculator gives an estimate of the savings you can make. This estimate is based on the average energy consumption of the old bulb and the led replacement bulb. The purchase price of both bulbs is not included in the calculation.

The estimate gives a good indication for replacement of incandescent or halogen bulbs. In general, fluorescent tubes are more efficient, so the savings will be less. For more acurate results we advise you to use our bulb wizard. In the search results you will find a calculation per specific LED bulb. This way you can find the LED bulb that will save you the most in the long term.
